DENVER -- As a longtime shortstop, Ian Desmond knows all too well the value of a good first baseman. Cheap 76ers Jerseys China .Hes vowing to be that reliable as the Colorado Rockies convert him to a position hes never played. He doesnt even have a first basemans glove of his own yet, borrowing one from a buddy until his arrives in the mail.Although the Rockies solution at first base seems out of left field -- Desmond did play 29 games in left for Texas last season -- its really not that far-fetched. Or so the Rockies are banking on, finalizing a $70 million, five-year contract Tuesday with the two-time All-Star whos gone from shortstop to outfielder and now back to the infield.I have all the faith in the world that Ians going to be a good first baseman, Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said. The 31-year-old Desmond will take over for Mark Reynolds, whos now a free agent. And while Desmond cant recall ever playing the position, even as a kid, he did prove to be a fast learner last season when he moved from shortstop to the outfield for the Rangers.I know what it takes to be prepared every day, and thats what Im going to do, said Desmond, who had his wife and young kids sitting in the front row for his introductory news conference.Desmond played at an All-Star level for the Rangers in 2016, hitting .285 with 22 homers and 86 RBI as he split time between left and center. Before that, he was a shortstop for the Washington Nationals. The Rockies gave him a lucrative deal to learn a new skill set at Coors Field, where hes a .379 career hitter in 23 games.Yes, the ball does fly here. Yes, it is a good place to hit, Desmond said. For me, personally, the reason I play well here is because I like coming here. I enjoy coming to Colorado. I enjoy the people in the city. Im from a small town in Florida, where when you put the blinker on to change lanes, the people behind you wave. Thats very common here.Desmond will get salaries of $8 million next year, $22 million in 2018, $15 million apiece in 2019 and 2020, and $8 million in 2021. Colorado has a $15 million option for 2022 with a $2 million buyout. He would get a $1 million assignment bonus if traded, and if traded, he could not be dealt additional times without his consent. To hone his fielding skills, Desmond borrowed one of Correlle Primes gloves; Prime just so happens to be a first baseman in the Rockies system. Years ago, Desmond took Prime under his wing when Prime worked out at the same hitting facility in the Sarasota, Florida, area.Little did the friends realize one day that they would be in the same organization -- playing the same position. Its bittersweet for me, Desmond said. Trying to get this young man prepared for the big leagues, and hes a first baseman, and Im proud of how far hes come and the progress hes made. Now I come in and play first base. Were talking, and its like, I would rather it be me than anybody else. Now I get to go to spring training with him. Now he gets to watch me work during the season. I get to see what he does firsthand and see if theres anything I can help him with. Just be there to support him.One things for sure: Desmond has a talented infield to work with in third baseman and perennial Gold Glover Nolan Arenado, shortstop Trevor Story and second baseman DJ LeMahieu.Desmond certainly wont force his way into a leadership dynamic either. Not his style. Hes more of a quiet leader. You cant come here and expect to be the man, Desmond said. Im going to come in with a lot of respect for those guys, just get in where I fit in.Hes not sure where he might bat in a potent lineup that also features outfielders Charlie Blackmon, Carlos Gonzalez and Gerardo Parra. Hes on board with wherever first-year Colorado manager Bud Black pencils him in.Im going to work as hard as I can right now to be the best first baseman I can be, Desmond said. Ill keep the other tools fresh also, just to try to be as much of a help as I can.I think about the opportunity here, and I think about how much of a sports town this is, how deserving these fans are. That is what brought me here. First base just happened to be the position I was able to fill. Its not about the ball flying [at Coors Field] -- this is about the opportunity to bring winning back here. Cheap 76ers Jerseys . Cheap NBA Jerseys. exas A&M post-match quotes:HEAD COACH LAURIE CORBELLI:On getting the win and being honored tonight...I was prepared (to have the ceremony) either way. I was really, really happy with the way the team fought back. Set one was pretty smooth for a while. We got into a bad rotation and couldnt close out set one. But, the whole time we were in a position that we could seize the opportunity and put ourselves in a position to win.On if this is the biggest win...Yes, this is the biggest win of the season. Missouris ranked, and their RPI is around 16 and they are leading the conference, undefeated halfway through the season. I thought we had chances to get other big wins, but we werent able to capitalize. That was on my mind since we left Georgia. I know the players were thinking about the match. That was a big match. For us, it helped us recognize our identity, that we are capable of winning. The bubble just burst in the first and we had to find what we were missing in that first set. A lot like the Georgia game, getting off to a slow start. They had us trailing and we were off to one of the slowest starts of the season and we responded. I think the team started to feel it and understand it at that point. Even when we are down and struggling, we still have the emotion in us to win it. On the balanced attack...Our five attackers were in double-figure points. I love that about our team that we are really balanced. If we are in system and the blockers have to honor [Kaitlyn] Blake and [Jazzmin] Babers, then the outsides just have such an advantage. They are talented and they hit hard and high. Our challenge is to be in system and to have Stephanie [Aiple] with the ball at the net as often as possible. Our passers are working so hard to get that every time. They put a lot of pressure on themselves. They want to be perfect. When teams like Missouri and Georgia come at you with tough serving, our passers struggled for a while, but they have great moments where the team would take advantage of it and our offense was unstoppable. Missouri plays some (great) volleyball over there, and I feel lucky that we got all of our starters out there. They had some unfortunate injuries and we got a chance to take advantage of them with a match like this.On sophomore middle blocker Kaitlyn Blake...I love Blakes fire. Its so genuine. She is playing middle for the first time in her collegiate career. She is just so physically dominant that teams have to honor her, and she just keeps going. It almost makes me laugh when I watch her play, because some plays she makes are just so interesting. Her arms are all over the place and she flies around, but she is so physical and she loves to play. She always goes 110 percent, and its really fun to watch. I think the team feeds off of her.TEXAS A&M SENIOR MIDDLE BLOCKER JAZZMIN BABERSOn Laurie Corbelli being honored for her 500th win at Texas A&M...It was awesome. Before our last game, Emily [Hardesty] said, lets win for Laurie and John. I thought it was great that (Corbelli) got to celebrate it at home. We celebrated it a little bit on the road, but its always good to be on your home court. On the mindset after dropping the first set...At that point you just have to forget it, take what you learned from it and move on. One thing Stephanie [Aiple] said at the beginning of the set is to stay positive no matter what happens. So after dropping the first set, we just put it behind us, kept our heads up. We have to stay positive no matter what happens. On her father Syracuse head football coach Dino Babers being at the match and his post-game speech...I believe his record is 4-0 (at A&M matches). We played his speech before the Florida game right as it started blowing up on the internet, but not before tonights game. He was just a dad today. TEXAS A&M JUNIOR OPPOSITE SIDE HITTER ASHLIE REASOROn her performance...Stephanie [Aiple] just kept giving me the ball. I have to thank the middles for pulling the middle blockers, so I pretty much had a split most of the time. It came from the passers, middles and it came from Stephanie. Im just lucky to get the ball. It was just good attacking overall tonight. On emotions during big games...You could tell in the Georgia match that it was so emotional from the first point to the last point. Our team runs off energy, and I think today the energy was very consistent. I dont think there was ever a dip in the communication. Todays match was really emotional for us, too. With an undefeated team coming into our house, we wanted to give them their first loss. Obviously, that is emotional for all of us. It was fun, for them to come here and us to take it to them.On carrying momentum to future matches...Take the next team and play like we did tonight. It was pretty consistent, and everyone was really focused on this match. So we are just going to take it one match at a time for the next nine matches we have left in conference play.
